It's my Two Year Anniversary - Happy Birthday Blog!
What is the post-New Age paradigm? How do we TRULY integrate East and West, mind and body, sense and soul, psyche and spirit, spacious contemplation and razor-sharp discernment? What can we learn from honestly examining the mistakes of the past and how do we move forward as initiated spiritual adults?
Hi Everyone!
I started blogging here at Zaadz two years ago this month. Which also happens to be my regular birthday month. This has been an amazing experience.
Birthday cake 2
The central underlying theme of my entire blog is that this new vision has three key elements:
1) Cognitive Development/Critical Thinking
2) Shadow Work/Psychological Awareness and Process
3) Inquiry-Based Practice
I began as a way to try and organize my thoughts toward writing a book, and to create more community around both my ideas of a 21st Century Spirituality and the practical application of Ken Wilber's Integral Theory.
Prior to beginning this blog I didn't know a single person who read Ken Wilber, six months in I had been invited to do a dialog with him on The Secret for his Integral Naked Website! I also have no educational background to speak of - I came to America a poor refugee immigrant on the run from a pending jail sentence as a South African conscientious objector in the waning years of Apartheid. It has been extraordinary to find a community of spiritual intellectuals with wide interests and education and get into the engaging dialog we have created!
I am marking this two year anniversary with some birthday aspirations/intentions. As I did on my one year anniversary,I am going to make this into an archival blog post that will be a way for readers to navigate through my extensive body of work: symposia, movie reviews/analysis, and theoretical writing on my own thinking about my work in the world as a healer/bodyworker/DJ/retreat leader/cleanse coach/dance facilitator/yoga teacher/mentor to other teachers and healers.
This archival organization will include work from both my first and second year here on Zaadz/Gaia, but will select only the pieces I am the most proud of and that are the most widely read.
By the way - I was recently nominated as a Brillante Weblog for the Premio awards!

Perhaps you are already feeling what comes next: I will not be blogging for a while, but plan instead to focus on both writing my book and getting it published. Words cannot express my gratitude to those who have supported, challenged, refined and cheered on my efforts here over the past two years. I need to restructure my time so as to devote more attention to my personal practice of yoga and meditation, serious writing toward Making The Leap: 21st Century Spirituality and taking my work in the world to it's next level as I enter my15th year in that endeavor.
In the meantime, I am leaving you with a deep archive of material to explore, and I hope you will link people to this blogpost when you want to introduce them to my thinking.
The website for my teaching and healing work (which will get a major face-lift later this year) is www.julianwalkeryoga.com
Those of you who want to experience that work in person, consider coming to my Earth and Sky Retreat to Ojai May 28-31, 2009.
I will also be in Tampa Bay, Vancouver, and at Kripalu and Esalen in 2009 - stay tuned to my above website for info...

Happy “birthday,” Julian! Your archive really brings it home what great work you've done here and how prolific you've been. I sometimes tell myself (and my wife tells me) that I need to get offline and start writing on something for publication. I am so happy that you are actually taking that step. Best of luck, bro! I'm sure it will be an excellent book.
Best wishes,
Bruce

thanks sarah!
loved hillary's speech last night.
i bet they already offered her a cabinet position prior to announcing biden - cause she knocked it out of the park and bill seemed happy and emotionally open…
Julian,
I never knew about your past. Have you ever blogged about your prior life in South Africa or your experience in becoming a refugee? Maybe its not something you'd want to share on the web. Anyways, glad things have worked out well for you in your current life situation.
no too much ben.
basically i had to flee after becoming a conscientious objector gainst the draft to support apartheid. i had 4 days to spare until a warrrant would have been issued and i would have been called to stand trial and face a 6 year jail sentence…. i always knew it would come to that though - so was prepared psychologically.
always hard to emigrate though - especially with little money..
4 days isn't long to prepare for such a decision, but being psychologically prepared would make it slightly easier.
So, how did you go from a poor refugee immigrant to a yoga teacher being interviewed by Ken Wilber?
only in America…
hmmm in 20 words or less? :O)
i mean i left the country with four days to spare - had been preparing for a few years. my family had already left - i only cut it so close b/c i was playing concerts in a protest rock band - under assumed names for fear of reprisals…
i followed my passions. lived without a car. meditated, read and did yoga. worked for minimum wage. became self employed. taught guitar lessons, did modeling for drawing classes, started doing massage and teaching yoga, got into wilber, kornfield, jung, campbell, watts, welwood, chodron, grof, lowen, reich, pierakos etc… found maverick yoga and bodywork mentors & a community of experimental experiential adventurers, traveled to india, never looked back…
Happy birthday, Julian. Have you made a wish?
Quite a body of work, there, quite a service to mankind, er, personkind.
Sounds like you are taking a deep and meaningful step toward your goals… Congratulations!
Based on what you've shared here and in your teaching, your book will be a good read.
You are correct that the water is wonderful… even in the deep end… good to have you in the water.
thanks david and annie!
