Transformational Energy: A Grounded, Holistic Introduction

Posted on Jul 12th, 2008 by Julian : integral healer Julian

I have had the following video up on youtube for almost a year, and have featured it in a couple of my blogposts on yoga, bodywork and energy...Most notably my Four Initiations post as well as the lead off post for my Riding the Kundalini Dragon symposium.

Open Sky Bodywork

The interesting thing is that when people see it they of course have a variety of responses - largely because they don't really know what they are looking at - so i thought to do a follow up video that goes into a little more detail about my work, about the reality of energetic process and how it relates to working with mind-body healing, personal transformation and ecstatic initiation!

Julian Walker: Energy, Bodywork, Yoga & Transformation

I have been doing this kind of work with people for over a decade and it has also been a huge part of my own personal practice, healing and growth process.

For me when i started to really make these connections between body, mind, breath, energy, emotional holding and the kundalini wave form or unwinding response universally referred to by different names in different traditions - it was like finding the holy grail of somatic psychology, yoga and bodywork!

This understanding - and more importantly, the experience of this kind of mind-body energetic process is a doorway between the inner and outer worlds, a way to access the unconscious via the body, a way to heal physical issues, re-align the body and process deep emotions, while gaining access to one's ecstatic potential and sense of grace, beauty,  and humanistic spirituality...

Interested to know more? My website is here - and this lead off post from my Integrative Spirituality symposium is a good place to start too!

While I haven't experienced what the video portrays, within the last several months I have experienced an impulse for free form dance and movement.  For example, I'd be walking on the trail (which I love to do and “record” the sounds of footsteps over various rocks, water, peat…within my memory) and want to stretch my arms out wide, enjoy the wind.

Tried to talk about this with friends, who think that's weird :)

Also, after longer yoga routines (beginner as of last winter) I've felt the impulse for free form dance and gone ahead at home and done so.  No problem, I live alone :)

Again, friends say, “Um, okay then, love ya anyway.”  Much of this is new for me.  I'm enjoying the information on your blogs and wish there were similar “schools” in face to face life where I live (rather remote area) so I could learn and understand more.  Not sure if this is related to what you're saying above, but it's as close as I've experienced.

Happy Saturday :)

absolutely tiger!

yes i think if we allow practices like yoga to start to open us up there is an impulse toward spontaneous movement - movement as an expression - a sense of “being moved” rather than “doing” the movement… this is where yoga came from, right? walking on a trail in nature or a beach might evoke something similar, as might love-making or playing an instrument… what i hear you describing is a kind of gestural expression of joy and communion - so beautiful!

for me free form dance and yoga are two points along a continuum and both lead to both a) the kind of energetic process i am describing and demonstrating above and b) the  exquisite stillness that comes afterward….

i teach a class every Friday night that goes from flow yoga to ecstatic dance to deep stillness - its a fantastic journey!

check out this amazing essay by stuart sovatsy about all the cross-cultural similars to “kundalini” and how he contextualizes the phenomenon…

Thanks, Julian!  Great essay…  I followed a few of the links on the site and discovered one that spoke to me about my blog entry today.  As well as the description of walking…I know that way of walking…  Not all the rest, eh, but still.  Reread it a couple of times, wow.

I'm a former violist (classical, fiddle, jazz) and pianist, now tapping on whatever is around to make noise!  I tried to tell people, the music just comes through you, you can't really stop it anyway.  More of those raised eyebrow looks.  So what, it's fun :)

It's cool, you know?  Living all these years experiencing things, not really understanding them or knowing where to look for answers or information - then suddenly, unexpectedly, discovering the answers, information, paths…exist!     Happy dance :)

Caring about raised eyebrows all that time but not letting them deter me…  Trying to describe the sense of flow, contentment, ecstasy, following stillness, even at the really basic place I'm at…well, usually, I lacked for words and let others roll their eyes.

Thanks, again!  I kinda feel like a kid here :)

as someone who has experienced and grown tremendously from doing this work with you, i just wanted to add a note here, j…to share a few words of gratitude for your work and the space you hold within it…

'being moved' from the inside out has assisted my spiritual growth through a deeper experience of what it is to be authentically human…and this theme has spread throughout my life like a wildfire…the spark you provided through this work is one of the most valuable gifts i have ever received…allowing me to show up fully in my power and purpose, creating depth and meaning of my life…yes, sir, its been an amazing journey and i would not change anything for the world…so, i thank you.

and to anyone who might find themselves curious about this work…i highly suggest checking it out…there really is nothing else i have experienced quite like it…
