Hey Everyone, I thought to give an overview of the work Hala Khouri and I will be presenting at Esalen Institute June 24 - 29, 2007. The seminar is called Urban Yogi: Training in Contemporary Mind-Body Yoga and is open to yoga teachers, bodyworkers, therapists and any interested students of these disciplines...
What follows is both for anyone who may be interested in the work, as well as a way to help me organize my thoughts heading into the training...
Hala brings her extensive training in Somatic Experiencing as well as an M.A. in psychology from Pacifica and many years of yoga teaching experience. I bring my 13 years as a teacher and bodyworker and the unique Open Sky body of work I have created that includes an integral perspective on psychology, mind-body healing and energetics.
Arrival and Intro
The proceedings begin with an opening circle on Sunday evening.
Day One
Monday morning we have the first of our three hour morning sessions that will include some combination of asana practice, concentration, loving-kindness, vipassana and/or witness meditation, Somatic Experiencing-based exercises, on occasion dance, anatomical information, simple bodywork techniques etc...Hala and I will teach this first segment together.
Monday afternoon we have the first of our three hour learning sessions. Hala will teach The Triune Brain and The Physiology of Trauma.
Day Two
Hala teaches the morning session and focuses on incorporating empathic awareness of the teacher-student relationship via engaging in the asana practice as one of several different student archetypes we will describe..... should be interesting! The intention is to experientially embody different states of being as a way to build empathy for what different types of students are experiencing in a class. This applies to other healing/teaching modalities as well.
In the afternoon I will present my intro to Mind-Body Psychology using the Jungian concept of the Ego-Self axis, standard understandings of the unconscious, and my own unpacking of the chakra system as a developmental model that describes how various developmental processes and emotional qualities unfold in the body. I will bring in Kohut's Self Psychology and the useful concepts of age appropriate mirroring, idealization needs and optimal disillusionment. Some discussion of archetypes as well as transpersonal/integral stages of prerational, rational and transrational in relationship to trauma and healing.
I will also touch on an overview of some concepts around Surface Work, Depth Work and Integration.
Tuesday will also carry our first evening session - a two hour group discussion facilitated by Hala with my support on the Teacher-Student Relationship.
Day Three
I teach the morning session and give an experiential introduction to the anatomical "high-charge" correlations to the chakra system. This is a powerful and direct way of grasping the power of mind-body process and will bring up the deeper significance of the psychophysical process that can be accessed through breath, asana, touch and meditative attention. So far we have been setting up the safe space and resources to now allow a little more energetic discharge and process work. Some teaching of hands-on techniques.
In the afternoon I will present more on the Surface, Depth and Integration Work, as well as a diagram on the process of mind-body healing work that describes a process from "trigger" to "trauma" to "spin cycle" to "resource" to "titration." We will also go into the high-charge anatomy with an illustrated lecture and a brief bodywork demonstration of the somatopsychic "wave" and working with energetic process in real time.
Day Four
i will lead the morning session and weave mirroring exercises, and group ecstatic dance exercises into the yoga. End with walking meditation in the stunning Big Sur surround.
The afternoon is free.
Our second evening session is a group discussion on Psyche Spirit. Facilitated by myself with Hala supporting.
Day Five
Friday morning we have a closing circle and embodied ritual.
I think we have around 30 participants at this time - with space for a few more!
I am so thrilled to be up at Esalen, both because it is a spectacularly beautiful place to share deep transformational work, and because I have always dreamed of teaching there and have some small sense of following in the big footsteps of Alan Watts, Joseph Campbell, Stan Grof, Fritz Perls and others who taught at Esalen in the early days of the Human Potential Movement....

Help

J~
Guess we might not hear from you much this coming week? I wish you all a fabulous week of stretching, healing, integration and celebration: mind, body, spirit… fully!
Upon your return, I do hope (mmmm, request) that you share any experiences that you want with those of us who were not in attendance ;-)
Cheerfully, ~ Stacy
oh you bet girl!
any particular areas of interest?
i am planning to try and get some good digital audio of the talks……
good audio? great! any chance of video too?
since i won't be present for the experiential seminar which has incredible value :-(
i am piqued by these:
*my own unpacking of the chakra system as a developmental model that describes how various developmental processes and emotional qualities unfold in the body.
*experiential introduction to the anatomical “high-charge” correlations to the chakra system
*several different student archetypes we will describe
*Kohut's Self Psychology and the useful concepts of age appropriate mirroring, idealization needs and optimal disillusionment. (i will investigate this on my own as well ;-)
to a (slightly) lesser extent:
*diagram on the process of mind-body healing work that describes a process from “trigger” to “trauma” to “spin cycle” to “resource” to “titration.”
Julian, I'm not sure how much of this can be brought into a blog/ discussion…. it is what intrigues me in the context of this cyber space :-) … since you asked!
Esalen Envy <wink>
~Stacy
hey stace
cool!
do you have my cd set?
some of what is grabbing you is contained in those talks…
hmmm you are inspiring me to bring my camcorder!
good morning Julian~
cd set? how did i overlook this offering? want to hook me up with a link (if i don't find it first ;-)
imho, definitely bring your camcorder! i tend to prefer video clips over audio clips as it engages more modalities (not to mention i'm a V K A person anyways, fairly balanced tho). not to mention, you are easy on the eyes to look at, combined with some wicked smarts (always nice to start the day with some uplifting love <grin> )
enjoy your day ~J
~ stace
well thank you stacy - i have always felt the same. :O)
ok so here.
That sounds like really interesting stuff, Julian. Some audios or videos would be great.
julian—definitely bring your camcorder!!!!
i echo stacy as far as interest goes, as well as:
* the Jungian concept of the Ego-Self axis
*Some discussion of archetypes as well as transpersonal/integral stages of prerational, rational and transrational in relationship to trauma and healing.
have a blast!!!
you're back! how was it?
:)
Ditto, Daate! I was curious as well…. So, let's hear it Julian… we're inviting ;-)
off the hook amazing…. :O)
i will post something this week about it and invite the participants to share some of their experiences!
let's see. the summary:
33 particpants. 2 instructors. the “dance dome” at esalen that looks out over the ocean.
3 hour experiential sessions in the morning. yoga, dance, partner work, meditation, somatic experiencing exercises.
3 hour afternoon sessions of psychology, energetics, anatomy etc
2 hr evening opening circle, closing circle and mid-week discussion circle on the teacher- student/healer-client relationship.
5 days of hard work.
peak moment - the person who said someone else's energetic opening/unwinding release ” sorta looked fake” having her own powerful and undeniable opening the next day - the look on her face! :O)
fun factoid: i took my portable 2 CD mixer dj set up with me for the first time and mixed live in the classes!
bottom line: a full spectrum journey from slow subtle grounding, resourcing and orienting work to cognitive learning to ecstatic free-form dance and emotionally cathartic yoga.
oh yea and the place is out of this world magnificent, majestic, beauty everywhere you turn - the baths feel like you're in ancient rome: stone arches, sulphurous hot springs, naked people feeling safe and natural….
mo' later…
~j
tee-hee…..very edenic-sounding. hope you managed to record some o' this magic. :)
additional coolness: a couple folks in the workshop having never met me as a result of reading my zaadzblog! a couple folks on the esalen property but not in the workshop who recognized me from zaadz and said hi!
i recorded my first talk - which started with a discussion of contemporary shamanism and then segued into a discussion of the chakras via archetypal images, spiritual practice as a dialog between the cconscious and unconscious moving toward jung's idea of the ego/self axis, and a bit about kohut's ideas of how the self devlops…
we got some basic video of people arriving for opening circle, but i didnt think it was cool to video any of the experiential stuff because it is quite personal work…
some goood video of the journey home down the spectacular big sur coast, as well as some great photos of esalen and of my teaching partner hala and assistant tessa!
when are you putting the videos up (particularly that of your first talk, and also of your drive along highway 1? i miss california!)
my friend sam, who i met on zaadz and who works and lives at esalen, said he met you—shoulda told him to say hi for me.
can't wait to see the videos. :)
yeah i met sam - what a great presence…
also met a guy who works at I-I.
i only have audio of the first talk and will probably try to package it…
as soon as my computer guy can come over and instal some stuff and i get a quick edit job done and upload my HD footage i will have a little fun travel video up here…
may take a while i aint heard back from him and it's a holiday tomorrow…
well i'll be happy to buy it when it's packaged; that's actually a good idea. will you add it to another set or sell it on its own?
separately i think. :O) maybe even through radio qi…..
that reminds me i need to write to delia…..:)
she seems to be settling in - we had lunch before i left - pity it couldn't be a threesome! :O)
never thought i'd say this, but i'm wishing more and more i was in la…..maybe not for long….but at least to see the many friends i've made out there. :)
did you used to live here daate?
do come visit!
i lived in half moon bay for two years. and i miss the hell out of san francisco!!!
i will come visit. i'm due for a road trip up highway 1. this may not be for a while however….but delia did offer me her couch for when i do come out. :)
hmmm half moon bay huh? i will have to look that up - sounds nice..
well when you are couch surfing perhaps the three of us can catch a wave over to a lunch spot in the sun.. :O)
sounds wonderful….:)
