Below is my response to the many emails about this supposedly amazing mayan/cosmic trigger point/new age dawning hoo ha day:
Hi Everyone
Not sure if we know each other, but seeing as I am included in this list, I thought I might offer an alternative perspective...for whatever it might be worth to you.
Today, tomorrow and everyday I think we have a responsibility to be part of creating a grounded, adult spirituality. No santa claus, no magenta fluorescent UV beam that manifests thoughts and desires a million fold, no channeled information from an alternate universe, no tooth fairy, no jesus coming down from the sky to do a final video game battle with satan - this non-rational ungrounded fantasy is part of why the world is in so much trouble, whether the fantasy is in the mind of the "martyrs" of al qaida, or christians awaiting the rapture, or harmless-seeming new age junk-science nonsense "chanelled" complete with poor grammar and bad philosophy, it all represents an incredible stunting of mental and spiritual growth...
My suggestion is not new: self-inquiry, personal development and collective engagement. Inquire into the nature of this human experience through good literature, meaningful art, honest cinema. Pay attention to current events and engage the grown-up art of analysis and interpretation. Cultivate healthy critical thought and a sense of nuanced moral judgement.
Meditate to develop real compassion by being honest about your own suffering and the suffering of the world. Touch gently but courageously the fear in the human heart that leads us to fabricate and believe highly improbable interpretations of reality and the cosmos in order to not have to grow through the difficult but rewarding process of existential and spiritual adulthood.
Ask the difficult questions that human beings have asked since at least ancient Greek times. Questions about the nature of truth, beauty and goodness, personal happiness and societal or global responsibility - and dont settle for the incredibly oversimplified drivel and mystified fantasy that generally circulate through the new age email lists.
*For an unparalleled contemporary integral philosophy that includes spirituality, psychology, social studies and more - read Ken Wilber. A Brief History of Everything is a good start.
*For a brilliant and fun read on soical worldviews and the evolutionary process that moves through cultures check out Spiral Dynamics by Don Beck and Chris Cowan.
*For a wonderfully meaningful synthesis of Buddhist wisdom and psychological awareness read Jack Kornfield's A Path with Heart.
*For a highly readable and revelatory tour through the history of religious belief and the iconoclastic doubters from Aristotle to Jesus to the Buddha to Emily Dickinson to John Lennon check out Jennifer Hecht's masterpiece - Doubt, a History.
*For a stark reflection on where we stand currently in the dangerous nexus of religion and politics check out Sam Harris' briliant book The End of Faith - Terror, Religion and the Future of Reason.
*Finally, the Pulitzer Prize winning classsic from Ernest Becker called The Denial of Death is a work of true genius.
With kindness (and not a little impatience) I suggest that Otober 17th is as good a day as any to choose depth.
Peace
~Julian
